TLIC Family. Day 4. January 4: It was very good.

THINK TOGETHER

Think about the word “good.” Have you ever been told to “be good?” Look around the room. What do you see that you would call “good?”

READ TOGETHER

Genesis 1:31. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.

When God was finished creating everything he looked at it all and said that it was all very good. He was very happy with everything he had made. Have you ever made something and felt proud of it? That’s how God felt when he created the earth and everything on it.

Sometimes we use the word “good” to mean “just OK.” Like when we say that ice cream is good, but it would be better with sprinkles. So it’s “just OK” until those sprinkles get added on top. Or we might say “that movie was good, but not great.” It was “just OK.”

But in the Bible, the word “good” means something is doing exactly what God made it to do. God called the trees good because they made fruit just like they were supposed to. And God called the birds good because they flew in the sky just like they were supposed to. And God called the dogs good because they did all the things that dogs are supposed to do (what are dogs supposed to do?).

Have you ever bought a toy that didn’t work the way it was supposed to? That toy was NOT good. And it probably didn’t make you very happy.

When something is good, when it is doing what God made it to do, that honors God and makes him very happy.

Are you good? Do you always do everything that you are supposed to do? Do you always make God happy? Are you always kind? Are you always helpful? Do you always tell God thank you for all the good things he does for you, and all the good things he gives you?

The Bible says that none of us are good. None of us do everything we are supposed to do. We are all like a broken toy sometimes. In fact, there’s only been one person who was always good all of the time – Jesus! Jesus always loved others. Jesus always loved God. Jesus always gave God the credit. Jesus always obeyed. Jesus was always kind. God always looks at Jesus and says, “Behold, he is very good.”

We can never be good on our own. We can never do everything the way we are supposed to. That’s why we need Jesus to be good for us. And he is! And when we trust that Jesus is good for us, then God will call us “very good” too. Just like Jesus.

Because of Jesus it’s OK if we aren’t good all the time because he was good for us.

With Jesus and his love for us, we can do good too!

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

What is something GOOD that you can do right now? (Remember “good” means doing what we are supposed to do like obeying mom and dad and being helpful around the house).

OR

Watch Toy Story 2 together (or the clip below).

  • Talk about how Woody wasn’t being a “good” toy until he was back doing what he was supposed to do – playing with Andy and bringing Andy joy.
  • Talk about how we are “good” – by trusting God to take care of us while we love him and others.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

Thank you for always being good. And thank you for being good for me. Help me to be good and do what God wants me to do knowing that you love me no matter what, even when I’m bad.

Amen
