THINK TOGETHER.
Have you ever saved up your money for something special? What was it?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 13:11. Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.
Some people try to make a whole lot of money all at once. Maybe they will gamble or play the lottery hoping to strike it rich. Or they might become a victim of any one of hundreds of get rich quick schemes (you can ask your mom and dad about pyramid schemes). Solomon is warning us that getting money quickly rarely works out for the best. Most people who make a lot of money very quickly lose it just as quickly. Many professional athletes or entertainers, who go from having no money to having millions of dollars have lost all their money. Or children that inherit large amounts of money usually end up spending it all at once and having nothing to show for it.
The Bible says it is way better to make money slowly over time through hard work and diligence. Why? Because then you can grow up and mature with the money and develop the character needed to handle it.
Instead of getting more money we should love working hard and then trust God to provide what we need for the day. Jesus prayed, “Give us this day our daily bread.” He didn’t teach us to pray for the whole bakery, just what we need for the day. And if God does give us more than what we need, we should want to share it with others, especially the needy. That’s what Jesus did with us isn’t it? He had everything, we had nothing, so he came to earth and offered us everything that is his – even his own character. But not all at once. Little by little as we grow.
Because of Jesus we don’t have to worry about getting rich or getting everything we want all at once.
With Jesus we grow little by little.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Take some time to teach your kids about saving money so that it can grow little by little. Delayed gratification is an important lesson. What do your kids want to save up for?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, help me to love working hard with you way more than I love money or possessions. Amen.
