TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. JULY 5: PRIDE.

THINK TOGETHER.

What are you proud of?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 16:18. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

Pride is thinking too highly of yourself. It is putting yourself first, above others, and even above God. Pride was Satan’s original sin. He wanted to be God instead of wanting to serve God. Adam and Eve made the same mistake in the Garden of Eden. They thought they could be like God by eating the frit of Knowledge. They wanted to live life without needing God to tell them what to do.

Ever since Adam and Eve we have all been living a life full of pride. We are born believing that we don’t need God. Especially today the message of pride is everywhere. “Follow your heart.” “Be your true self.” “You can do anything you put your mind to.” “I just want you to be happy.” All of these messages tell you to put yourself first.

But Solomon and God say, Pride goes before destruction. Living a life of pride, of self-centeredness, of putting yourself first WILL destroy you. Why? Why is pride so destructive? Well first, you can’t be a Christian and be completely proud. In order to receive Jesus as your savior you have to first admit that you NEED a savior. That means you have to swallow your pride and ask for help. You have to confess that you are too weak and powerless to save yourself. If you choose to stay proud you will be separated from God forever.

Also in everyday life pride is destructive. The proud person never asks for help. They can’t admit mistakes or learn anything from others. If you choose to stay proud you will be separated from others too.

Jesus and his grace is the only true cure for the destruction of pride. Pride is what drives us to get ahead. But with Jesus you’re already ahead. You’re already with him. Wherever he is, you are! Now you can humble yourself like he did and choose to be second instead of first. You can choose to love from a humble heart.

Because of Jesus we have no need for pride.

With Jesus we can love from a humble heart.
