THINK TOGETHER.
Have you ever rushed through something and then had to do it all over again?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 21:5. The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.
Do you tend to rush through things just to get them done? I do sometimes. Solomon calls this being hasty and he says that only fools are hasty. The wise person has a plan, and that plan might take some time to accomplish. Usually, working a plan leads to abundance or success. But the foolish person does their work quickly without thinking it through. And that usually leads to poverty or failure.
When an athlete gets injured and then tries to return to playing too hastily – failure. When a student doesn’t plan a project but tries to do it at the last minute – failure. When a builder tries to cut corners while building a house – failure (and danger).
We live in a world where hastiness is valued. Fast food. Same day delivery. Streaming shows. Cleaning products. Fast passes at theme parks. We want everything done as quickly as possible. But is this good for us?
God always takes his time. He has never done anything hastily. In fact, God moves so slow that often, in the Bible, people got really mad at him for it. Abraham and Sarah waited 10 years to get their promised son. David waited 30 years to become king. Jonah was in the fish for three days, not three minutes. It’s been 2000 years since Jesus promised he would return.
So when it comes to how God is at work in your life through Jesus, and through the Holy Spirit, always remember that he doesn’t do anything quickly. God has a plan for your life and it is very slow and lasts your whole life (and even into eternity). God wants you to become like Jesus, and that is a lifelong process. No shortcuts. No haste. No “fast pass.” Why? Because God wants you to have the abundance of Jesus, not the poverty of your selfishness.
Because of Jesus God is slowly working in us to make us like him.
With Jesus we never have to rush anything, we can trust God’s slow timing.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
With the new school year upon us, take some time to discuss and put in place a plan for school year success. When and where will homework be done. What about getting ready for school? Compare this to God’s plan to make us like Jesus.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, help me to be patient and trust that you are always working on me. Amen.
