TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. SEPTEMBER 15: GLAD.

THINK TOGETHER.

What makes your parents happy?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 23:15. My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad.

Do you want to make your parents happy? Of course you do. How? Be wise.

Of course you should be wise because it will make your own life better. But another reason to be wise is because it will make your mom and dad glad. When parents have wise, trustworthy, honest children they can be full of joy knowing that their children will make right choices as they grow up.

Do your parents yell at you a lot? Are they constantly having to tell you what to do? Are you “always” in trouble? Well maybe you’re not being very wise. If your parents seem upset all the time maybe it’s because they are worried about how wise or how foolish you are growing up to be.

By the way, just because you aren’t making your parents glad or happy, doesn’t mean that they don’t love you. Parents can be sad or frustrated and still love their kids. In fact, like God, it’s because they love you so much that your foolishness makes then sad.

Also, don’t forget what wisdom means in the book of Proverbs. In Proverbs (and the whole Bible) wisdom is fearing the Lord. Do you remember what that means? It means to love, honor, respect, and obey God. It means loving what he loves. Mostly it means to trust him. Here’s the bottom line: When parents know that their children trust God, then they can start to trust their children.

And not just trust God in general, but trust Jesus specifically. Nothing makes our Heavenly Father or our earthly parents happier than to trust in Jesus as your Savior. Have you done that? If you have then God’s heart is glad, and likely, so is mom and dad’s.

Because of Jesus God’s heart is glad when we are saved.

With Jesus we can be wise and make our parent’s hearts glad too.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Talk with your children again about what it means to trust in Jesus as their savior. Explain that trust is what makes God and you happy, not perfection.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, trusting in you is wisdom. Help me to have this wisdom every day so that I can be glad in you, and make other’s hearts glad too. Amen.
