TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. SEPTEMBER 21: COUNSELORS.

THINK TOGETHER.

Who do you listen to for good advice?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 24:5-6. 5A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might, 6for by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory.

Solomon is proposing that wisdom and knowledge are what make a person strong, not the muscles, but the mind and the heart. In ancient times only a very foolish king would go to war without talking to his trusted counselors. Strong armies are great, but without a good plan he is doomed to failure.

This same truth applies to us in our spiritual lives today. None of us can make it through all the ups and downs of life without wise counsel (good advice). Notice that word wise. That is the key word. It’s not just that we need an abundance of counselors. Many bad counselors is still bad counsel. We need lots of good and wise counsel. Sometimes it even helps to have good counselors who may have different ideas. This helps us to see everything we need to see in a situation.

But what is WISE counsel? It is listening to those who love and fear God. Remember, that’s what wisdom is in the Bible – the fear of the Lord. Loving what he loves. Choosing what he chooses. Respecting what he respects.

Who or what are our wise counselors? Well, first the Bible. The Bible itself can tell us what to do and how to live. Of course the Bible isn’t always very specific in its advice, so we need some people to counsel us too in specific situations. People who know and love God and know and love you. Parents. Teachers. Pastors. And then friends who also love Jesus and are following him.

Of course Jesus is our greatest counselor. He lives inside of us through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us a new heart that wants what Jesus wants. But remember the way Jesus speaks to us most often is through the Bible and then through others too. Learning to listen to ALL your good counselors is the wisest way to live.

Because of Jesus we can have the wisdom of God.

With Jesus we always have the best Counselor with us.
