TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. OCTOBER 21: TOMORROW.

THINK TOGETHER.

Would you like to be able to tell the future? Why or why not?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 27:1. Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Even though we all know that we can’t time travel or predict the future many people still try to live like they can. Many people want to control their future, and so they boast about tomorrow.

In Proverbs there is the foolish sluggard who never makes any plans and never wants to do anything productive. But just as foolish is the person who thinks that they can control their future. This kind of fool talks about tomorrow as if it is a certainty. But it is very important for all of us to remember that nothing is certain. We never know what will happen in the NEAR future – next year, next week, tomorrow, an hour from now.

But the good news is that we DO know what is going to happen in the FAR future. Jesus IS coming back some day. We can count on that! If we have trusted him as our savior, we know that he IS going to take us to Heaven. We also know that he IS going to be with us in this life no matter what, and that he IS making us more and more like himself. Our future is good because our God is good.

The question ever person must answer is can we trust in the certainty of our FAR future enough to not try to control our NEAR future without all kinds of worrying and doubting and frustration when things don’t go our way?

James has good advice for us in his New Testament letter. He says that instead of saying, Tomorrow I am going to go do this and that, we should say, Tomorrow IF the Lord allows it, I will go do this and that. If the Lord allows. That means we still make plans, but we also trust whatever Jesus allows, or doesn’t allow us to do. Can you do that?

Because of Jesus our future is good.

With Jesus we can let Jesus control our future instead of us.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Draw pictures of Heaven together. What do you imagine it will be like to live with Jesus? (Remember that we will live on new Earth with God, not up in clouds)

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, I give control to you. Even when I make plans, help me to trust whatever you allow. Amen.
