TLIC FAMILY. DAY 317. NOVEMBER 13: THE CHAMPION.

THINK TOGETHER

Do you remember the story of David and Goliath? Can you tell it to each other?

READ TOGETHER

Today we come to the book of Hebrews. Can you find Hebrews in your Bible? Hebrews is a book that is all about how Jesus is BETTER. Jesus is better than angels. Jesus is better than Moses. Jesus is better than the law. Jesus is better than the temple. Jesus is just better. Why? Because Jesus is our champion!

Were you able to re-tell the story of David and Goliath? David courageously faces Goliath, slingshots him in the head, and becomes Israel’s champion, rescuing his brothers (and all Israel) from the fear of death at the hands of their terrifying enemy. Yay!

But the book of Hebrews tells us that there is a better David. A better champion. Jesus! Listen to how Hebrews describes Jesus here:

Hebrews 2:10. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the champion of their salvation perfect through suffering.

Hebrews 2:14-15. 14that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

You see, in the David and Goliath story we are not David facing the giant Devil. We are David’s brothers and sisters who are too weak and afraid to fight. But then, like David, Jesus came to us, and fought for us. But unlike David, Jesus lost for us. Jesus had to lose to win. First he had to die before he could rise again. Only by dying for us could he destroy death by coming back to life.

It is Jesus’ death on the cross for us that makes him the better David. The greatest champion. The savior of the world!

Because of Jesus our greatest enemies are all defeated.

With Jesus we don’t have to fear the Devil or even death.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Act out the story of David and Goliath together. Someone should be David, Goliath, and the brothers that were afraid. Talk about how we are not David in the story, Jesus is the “David” who rescues us from the “Goliath” of our sin.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you are my champion! Thank you for defeat the Devil and death and setting me free from fear and separation from God. Amen.
