TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. NOVEMBER 17: HEIR.

THINK TOGETHER.

Have you ever inherited something?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 29:21. Whoever pampers his servant from childhood will in the end find him his heir.

In Bible times people had servants. Sometimes a person’s servant would be so loved (our proverb says pampered) by their maser that they would be treated like their child. And sometimes that servant would even be adopted by their master becoming their son or daughter and even their heir.

Do you remember what an heir is? An heir is the one (usually the oldest child) who inherits (receives) the wealth of their parents when the parents die. And even before the parents die, the heir has a place of honor and respect and gets to enjoy all the family wealth.

So you can see that going from being a servant to an heir is a pretty big deal. From a nobody to a somebody. From having nothing, to having everything.

This is a picture of what God does for us when we are connected to Jesus. Before we receive Jesus into our hearts we are all servants of God, but not his heirs. And, in fact, we are pretty lousy servants. Because of sin in our hearts we try to serve ourselves instead of God. That’s why we all need Jesus.

But Jesus doesn’t just make us better servants. He makes us sons and daughters of God like himself. Jesus is the one who is the heir. He deserves all God’s treasure, all God’s wealth. But Jesus shares it all with us. He shares his inheritance with all who trust in him. Have you trusted in Jesus? If you have then you are an heir. You will share Jesus’ inheritance one day – he whole world will be yours to enjoy with him forever!

Because of Jesus we are children of God not just servants.

With Jesus we share in his inheritance.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Is there anything in your house that you inherited or that was passed down to you? Show these things to your kids. How do these things show love and honor? How do they prove that you are part of the family? What does Jesus share with us that proves we are in his family?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you are the best sharer ever. Help me to share all that I have knowing that everything that is yours is also mine to share. Amen.
