THINK TOGETHER.
Have you been asked to clean something today? What?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 30:12. There are those who are clean in their own eyes but are not washed of their filth.
Yesterday Agur said that the wicked refuse to honor their parents. They curse their fathers and won’t bless their mothers. In today’s proverb he says that the wicked think they are clean when they are actually filthy.
Have you ever been asked to clean something? I’m sure you have. And have you ever had to clean the same thing over again because it wasn’t clean enough the first time. Maybe you thought it was good enough, but then mom or dad said, “Do it again,” because it was still too filthy. You room maybe. Or the back seat of the minivan. Or maybe even your own body.
Foolish people think things are fine when they’re not. They think things are OK when they are actually bad. This can happen on a small scale and on a very big scale. On a very big scale a person might not think that they need Jesus to wash away the sin and filth in their hearts because they are “good enough.” This is the most foolish mistake a person can make isn’t it?
On a smaller scale we might think that we are clean in our own eyes – we think we’re fine the way we are. But when we have Jesus he lives inside of our hearts constantly changing us from the inside out. He is making us want what he wants, and love what he loves. Over time, this change slowly washes away the filth of our selfishness and pride and allows us to love others like he does.
Can you see where Jesus has not only taken away the punishment for your sin, but is also taking away your desire to sin in certain ways? As you grow up in Jesus you should be able to see this over time. Yes, it is very slow and it takes lots of trust in God, but its way better than being a fool who never changes.
Because of Jesus we are cleansed of all our sin forever.
With Jesus we are able to confront our sin knowing he loves us no matter what.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Find something dirty that needs to be cleaned. Ask: What would happen if we never clean this? Jesus doesn’t let us stay dirty either.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you washed me clean by your blood. Help me to never forget what you’ve done for me. Amen.
