TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. NOVEMBER 28: LEECH.

THINK TOGETHER.

Do you know what a parasite is?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 30:15. The leech has two daughters: Give and Give.

Leeches are pretty gross. People in the Old Testament battled against horse leeches. A horse leech is a fat worm-like creature that could enter into the nostril of a horse and suck its blood.

A warned you that it was gross.

Leeches are parasites. Do you know what a parasite is? A parasite is an animal that lives off of another animal (a host), often by attaching itself to the host and then drinking its blood. It literally takes the life out of its host so that it can stay alive.

Agur is saying that sometimes we can be leeches. When he says that the leech has two daughters, Give and Give, he means that people who just want things given to them are like leeches. They are parasites that drain the life out of others.

Give me that! I want some more. Where’s mine? Why didn’t I get any? When is it my turn? She got more than I did.

Do any of these leechy statements sound like you? Do you just want everything given to you without having to wait your turn or work hard for it? If you do, then you are acting like a leech. A life-stealing parasite.

Jesus gives us the power to be the givers instead of the takers. Because he gives us everything that is his own, we can wait our turn, work hard for things, and then even share them when we get them. With Christmas right around the corner, make sure you focus on what Jesus has given, not on what you can get.

Because of Jesus we have all that is his.

With Jesus we don’t have to get, get, get. We can give, give, give.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Do some Christmas shopping with your kids for gifts for others, helping them to focus on giving not getting. Remember what Jesus said, “It is better to give than to receive.”

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, I don’t want to be a leech. Help me to give from all that you have given me. Amen.
