TLIC FAMILY. DAY 333. NOVEMBER 29: RANSOMED.

THINK TOGETHER

Have you ever had to re-buy something that you lost?

READ TOGETHER

Do you remember the story of the Exodus? The Hebrews were leaving Egypt where they had been slaves for many years. It was Passover night, and God had asked the people to sacrifice a lamb and paint the blood of the lamb on the door posts. That lamb was called a “ransom.” Back then a ransom was a payment that you made to free someone from slavery. For the Hebrews the ransom that God required was the blood of the lamb. The lamb died in place of the people.

Hundreds of years later the Apostle Peter would use these same ideas from Passover to talk about how Jesus died for us. Listen to what he says here in chapter one of his first letter:

1 Peter 1:18-19. 18knowing that you were ransomed… 19with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

Peter wants you and me to remember each and every day that God saved us. How? Not with the blood of a lamb. Not with money. He saved us with the precious blood of Christ. God has rescued us from our own slavery, not to an Egyptian Pharaoh, but to sin and death. Now we belong to God. You see when someone ransomed you, they owned you. You became their possession. So when God ransomed the Hebrews they became his people again. He bought them back!

And if you are a Christian then God has bought you back too. You belong to him. And there is no better place to be than in the hand of God. Why? Because God doesn’t own us to make us his slaves. He owns us to make us his kids. And as his kids we get to share everything he has. All his love and all his world. No matter what. It’s all ours with God when we trust in Christ.

Have you been ransomed by God through Jesus’ blood shed on the cross?

Because of Jesus we have been ransomed by God and made his own.

With Jesus we can live free from sin and trust God instead.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Make Mark 10:45 a family memory verse.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, because of your precious blood I am free from slavery to sin and death. Thank you for rescuing me and buying me so that I can be yours. Amen.
