THINK TOGETHER.
Do you remember what the word Trinity means?
READ TOGETHER
John 1:18. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
God is a Trinity. He is Father, Son, and Spirit. He is three persons in one God.
John’s gospel begins by telling us about the relationship between God the Father and God the Son. He calls the Father, God, and says that no one has ever seen God. Have you seen God? Nope. Neither have I. No one has seen God the Father. In the Old Testament, God the Father said that no one can see him and live. Yikes. So it’s a good thing that you haven’t seen God the Father isn’t it?
But then John says something amazing. He says these words: the only God who is at the Father’s side. Who is he talking about? He’s talking about God the Son. Jesus. Jesus IS God. And John says that Jesus has made God the Father known. We can’t see the Father, but we can see the Son. Two Thousand years ago many people saw Jesus didn’t they? And Jesus said, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” Even today, when we “see” Jesus in the Bible stories, we are seeing the Father through Jesus.
Wow! What does all this mean? And what does it have to do with being wise? Everything. All throughout Proverbs it told us that to be wise we have to fear the Lord God. We have to know him and trust him. But, before Jesus came, knowing God the Father was hard. Trusting him was hard too. But when we see Jesus, when we see him on the cross, when we see him as a baby in a manger, we see a God that we can know and trust. We see the wisdom of God in that little baby. We see it in that perfect man on the cross dying for our sins. We see the Father’s great love for us, a love that would do anything for us and give anything to us, even his only Son. And that’s the greatest Christmas present ever!
Because of Jesus we can know God the Father.
With Jesus we can trust God the Father.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
What did you get for Christmas last year? Can you find it? What did that gift reveal about the giver of the gift? How does Jesus reveal the Father?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you’re the best Christmas present ever. Help me to want to know you more and more, and know God the Father too. Amen.
