THINK TOGETHER.
Have you ever been astonished by something?
READ TOGETHER
Matthew 11:19. wisdom is justified by her deeds.
Jesus said these words when people accused him of being a sinful fool. Can you imagine that? Can you imagine calling Jesus foolish, or even sinful? I can’t either. But people back then did. They even said he was on the same team as the Devil.
Why?
Well in Matthew chapter 11 it was because Jesus spent time with people having fun. Some people back then thought only being super serious was good and if you had fun, laughed, or went to a party you were sinning. Well, Jesus did all of those things. He had fun. He laughed. He went to parties at his friends’ houses.
The religious leaders in Jesus’ day were looking for a savior who was a military leader, or maybe a politician. Someone who would build and army and defeat all their enemies. Not someone who wandered around being nice to people, healing and helping them. Jesus didn’t fit into their definition of what a hero should be, so they rejected him and called him foolish.
But Jesus turned it around on them. He called them foolish. When he says that wisdom is justified by its deeds, he is saying that their deeds are foolish not his. He loved others, they did not. He had joy in his heart, they did not. He helped the sick and the needy people, they did not. And most importantly, he trusted God and they did not.
They wanted a hero that would solve all of their earthly problems. But Jesus came to solve our sin problem. He came to die for us and forgive us of all our sins. Why? So that we could have joy, and laugh, and have fun knowing that God loves us no matter what because we have been forgiven.
Because of Jesus our sin problem has been taken care of forever.
With Jesus we can enjoy life and have fun.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
In Matthew 11 Jesus is accused of eating too much and having too much fun. Why not have some fun making Christmas cookies or other deserts and enjoying them together in honor of Jesus.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you came so that we could have joy and enjoy life. Help me to enjoy this Christmas season with you. Amen.
