TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. DECEMBER 19: KINGS.

THINK TOGETHER.

Do you remember the story of the Three Wise Men?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 25:2. It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.

Yesterday we looked at the first half of this proverb. We said that God is good at keeping secrets. He kept it a secret that God would send God to save us. Everyone expected a hero to come, but nobody knew that the hero would be God himself coming as a baby in a manger. That part was concealed.

The second half of this proverb says that kings are glorious and wise when they search things out. A wise king tries to understand things. Learn things. Know things.

Do you remember the Christmas story of the three wise men? Sometimes they are called the three kings. But why do we call them wise? Because they searched for Jesus. God put a star in the sky to guide them, and the wise men “followed” the star all the way to Bethlehem where the wise men found the baby Jesus and worshiped him.

Matthew 2:10-11. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him.

Can we be like the three kings? Can we be wise and search for Jesus too? Yes, we can. In fact, one of the best ways to grow wise as you grow up is to learn how to read and study the Bible for yourself. It’s great to be taught about Jesus by others, but it’s also great to know how to search the Bible for the truth about God and the good news about Jesus on your own.

Because of Jesus we can be wise and seek God.

With Jesus can learn about him in his word.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Do your children own their own Bible? If not, why not go pick one out together. Once they do, make a plan for the new year to help them read it on their own.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, help me to search for you like the wise men did. Teach me to use your word, the Bible, to know you better. Amen.
