TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. DECEMBER 20: SMALL.

THINK TOGETHER.

Do you like small towns? Why or why not?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 25:2. Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: the ant, the rock badger, the locusts, the lizard.

You may remember that we talked about these small things back in November. Just because something is small, doesn’t mean that it can’t be wise. Ants are wise because they work so hard. Rock badgers are wise for building their homes in rocks. Locusts are wise because they work together. Lizards are wise because they are content.

The Christmas story talks about another small thing. A little town called Bethlehem. Do you know that song – O Little Town of Bethlehem? The book of Matthew says that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and then it quotes another book, the book of Micah. Can you find Micah in a Bible? Here’s what the prophet Micah said about Bethlehem:

Micah 5:2. But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

Bethlehem was a small town and an unimportant town. It was Joseph’s home. Mary and Joseph travelled to Bethlehem and there Jesus was born. The prophet Micah called Jesus the ruler of Israel. The one from ancient days.

But how can a newborn little baby from a little town be a ruler from ancient days?

Because Jesus was also God. Jesus lived even before he was born. Jesus’ life didn’t begin when he was born. His life never began. His life is eternal. It has no beginning and no end. Jesus took his great big life in a great big Heaven and brought it down to a little life in a little town. Why? So that he could take our little lives in our little towns and make them great big, eternal lives in Heaven with him.

Because of Jesus our little lives can be eternal lives.

With Jesus we can live a life that is full of importance when we let Jesus live through us.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Visit a small town’s Christmas decorations. Can God use small towns and “unimportant” people to make a difference? Yes he did and he can.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you make my little life big. Live your big life through me. Amen.
