TLIC Family. PROVERBS. JANUARY 5: PRUDENCE.

THINK TOGETHER.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 1:4. to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth.

Everyone is born simple. In the book of Proverbs, the simple person is the one who doesn’t know or understand things. Being simple isn’t bad if you are young. When you’re young you can’t understand everything yet. That’s why God had Solomon write Proverbs, so that the youth could learn to be prudent instead of simple.

But what is prudence? To be prudent means you have a plan.

If a family was going to take a long cross-country trip, but they packed nothing, had no money, no GPS, no gas in the car, and no plan for how to get there, you would call them foolish or maybe simple. But the prudent person makes a plan for their trip. How much money do we need? Where will we stop along the way? What about food and snacks in the car? Does our GPS work? Does our car work?

Has anyone ever asked you what you want to be when you grow up? What was your answer? Have you ever thought about a plan to become what you want to be? Of course what you want to be when you grow up will change as you get older. And sometimes things happen so that we can’t always do what we want to do. And that’s OK.

Why? Because way more important than what job we want to do when we grow up is this question: How do you want to live as you grow up? Do you want to live like Jesus? Do you want to help others like he did? Care for people like him? Be kind like him? Do you have a plan for becoming like Jesus? Are you simple when it comes to being like Jesus, or are you prudent?

Because of Jesus God has a plan for our life – be like Jesus.

With Jesus we can plan to live like him.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Do you have a family calendar? What is planned for today? How will it be accomplished? Is your family simple or prudent

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you had a plan to save us and you did it! Help me to be prudent and have a plan for living in a way that loves you and loves others. Amen.
