THINK TOGETHER.

Proverbs 1:22. “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?
There are many ways to be foolish instead of wise. Yesterday we read about the scoffer. The scoffer is a fool who has a bad attitude and is too smart for their own good. They criticize everything, disrespect authority, and even ignore God. Hopefully you are not a scoffer.
There’s another kind of fool mentioned in our verse though – the simple. The simple person is easily influenced and tends to believe whatever they hear. The simple person is led into sin because they want to fit in. The simple person makes bad decisions because they don’t know what is true and what is a lie.
One of the most important parts of growing up is to grow out of being simple. When you were a toddler you believed everything you heard. As you get older, hopefully you are learning to ask questions and make decisions on your own without just following the crowd. You don’t just believe everything you hear anymore. Wisdom learns to ask questions and listen to God and the people he has given to us to help us; people we can trust.
The great thing about Jesus is that he not only forgives us for our foolishness, but he also helps us to not be a simple fool. Many people think that being a Christian is foolish because Christians just believe everything they hear or read in the Bible. But Jesus doesn’t want us to believe without thinking. He wants us to believe what he says because it is actually true.
Because of Jesus we can know the truth about God, and life, and everything!
With Jesus we don’t have to be simple; we can ask questions andlearn the truth.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Watch a magician do a trick (or do a magic trick if you know one). Talk about how we shouldn’t believe everything we see or hear. Even with Jesus we need to know WHY what he said and did was true.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you want me to learn more and more about you. Help me to learn without being either gullible or a know-it-all. Amen.
