THINK TOGETHER.

When are you most tempted to lie?

Proverbs 6:16-17. ¹⁶There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: ¹⁷…a lying tongue.

The next thing God hates is a lying tongue.

It can be pretty tempting to lie can’t it? We think that lying gives us an advantage over others, or that it might keep us out of trouble. Lying can make us look better than others, and it can hurt our enemies. Sometimes people lie so much that they don’t even know that their lying anymore.

All of the problems in our world started with a lie. Satan lied to Eve and to Adam and they ate from the tree that God had forbidden them to eat from, and people have been lying to each other and to God ever since.

Do you ever lie? Do you tell half-truths sometimes (those are also lies)? Do you withhold truth when asked (also a lie)? Do you trick people and then cover it up by saying, “I was just joking” (this too is lying)?

Usually we lie because we are afraid of the truth. The truth might get us in trouble, or be embarrassing, or it might let others get something that we want. And so we lie to get our own way. The only way to overcome being a liar is to not be afraid of telling the truth.

Jesus said that the truth will set us free, and HE IS the truth! When you know the truth that Jesus loves you no matter what, then you don’t have to be afraid of any other truth. No truth, no matter how bad it makes you look or feel, can ever take away God’s love for you in Jesus.

Because of Jesus the truth has set us free from having to tell lies.

With Jesus we can always tell the truth.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Establish a no lying policy in your house. Everyone will commit to telling each other the truth. Not as a “law,” but as a way of showing each other grace and love.  

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you are the Truth. Help me to be truthful in all things knowing that the truth can’t separate me from your love for me. Amen.
