TLIC Family. PROVERBS. JUNE 12: THE HEART.

THINK TOGETHER.

Have you ever felt like no one understands you?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 14:10. The heart knows its own bitterness, and no stranger shares its joy.

Solomon is teaching his children (and us) something very important that we all must understand about ourselves. He’s reminding us that we all have two parts: an outside part and an inside part. Our heart is on the inside. When Solomon says heart he doesn’t mean the blood pumping muscle that keeps you alive. He means the deepest part of who you are, where all your feelings and emotions live. Feelings like bitterness (anger or sadness) and joy.

Here’s the truth about your heart: Only YOU know what’s in your heart. If you are sad, angry, bitter, happy, joyful, nobody knows how you really feel except you. Other people will only know if you decide to show what’s in your heart or tell what is in your heart. People can’t see inside of you, can they?

Have mom or dad ever asked you, “What’s the matter?” Or, “What’s wrong?” And you say, “Nothing.” Well, if you don’t share what is in your heart, then you can’t expect others to understand and help you.

And when you are around others, especially your friends or family, remember that what you see on the outside may not be what is happening on the inside. People can hide what is in their heart. In fact, they often do hide what is inside.

Jesus is the only person who knows everything in your heart. When you trust in Jesus to save you, the Holy Spirit comes into your heart and he knows everything that is inside of you. All bitterness and all joy. You never have to hide anything from God because he already knows it all. He knows you better than you know you. And guess what? He loves you anyway. So why not trust him and tell him everything in your heart? Then you can learn to trust others who love you and tell them what is in your heart too.

Because of Jesus our heart is known and loved by God.

With Jesus we can share what is in our heart without fear.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Watch the movie Inside Out together. This movie gives a great picture of what this Proverb is teaching.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you know my heart better than I do. Help me to trust you, and share my heart with you. Amen.
