THINK TOGETHER.
Have you ever been paid for hard work? How did that make you feel?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 14:23. In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.
The Bible begins with God himself working. He put his hands in the dirt and made Adam and then took Adam’s side and made Eve. After God had finished creating everything he saw that it was good. It made him feel good.
That’s what hard work is supposed to do, make us feel good. Hard work is supposed to satisfy us. Have you ever completed a task and then felt good about it?
Now to be honest, not all jobs make us feel satisfied. Some jobs are worse than others, that’s for sure. Sometimes a person has to take a job that is less than what they really want to do simply because they need the money to support themselves or their family, and that’s fine. Working so that you can eat and live is honorable. Like the proverbs also say, “No work and all talk leads to poverty.”
But even though we might not love our job, we can still find profit in hard work. Does the word profit mean making more money? Yes. But it also means being happy with your hard work too.
Do you work hard at everything you do even when it’s a job you do not love? If you can answer YES, then know that you are wise and that you are honoring God. Jesus wants us to work hard as if we are working directly for him. The Apostle Paul tells us to work “as unto the Lord.” The profit we gain from that might be money, or it might be something else, like the satisfaction of knowing that you are honoring your Creator and your Savior, Jesus.
Because of Jesus all hard work honors God.
With Jesus we can work hard at all we do as unto him.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Talk about your job with your children. Take them to work with you if you can. Explain to them what satisfies you about your job? How does your work honor Christ?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you honor my hard work. Help me to enjoy working hard even if I don’t love the job I’m doing at the time. Amen.
