Do you like being alone?

Proverbs 18:1. Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.
When God first made Adam and placed him in the Garden of Eden he said something very important. He said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” Then God made Eve so that Adam would have a friend and companion.
Solomon is saying something similar here in Proberbs18:1. He is saying that it is not good for us to isolate ourselves. Do you know what isolate means? It means to be alone. It means to not listen to others or get advice from others.
Now it is not wrong to want to be alone sometimes. We all need some alone time don’t we? Time to rest, and think, and pray. But we also need to be around other people, especially other Christians. Why? Because that is how we learn to love and care for others instead of just seeking our own desire. Often we want to be alone so that we can do whatever we want. But that’s not Jesus in you. Jesus in you wants to be with other people, sharing with them, being kind to them, saying nice things to them, and forgiving them too.
To help us to not be isolated (alone) God has given us two very special gifts – the Holy Spirit and the church. With the Holy Spirit living inside of us we are never alone. We always have the love of Jesus with us too. And with the church we always have other people that we can love. When God tells us to go to church he is protecting us from selfishness and bad judgment. Yes, we go to church to worship God, but we also go to church to learn how to love others like Jesus does.
Do you like going to church? Even if you don’t, remember that going to church isn’t just about having fun, it’s about learning how to put Jesus and others first. And that’s a very good thing.
Because of Jesus we are never alone.
With Jesus we can choose to be around others and love them like he does.

Go to church together this weekend. Talk about why we go to church. To worship God, and to learn how to love others, even when it is hard.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, with you I am never alone, and with your love I don’t have to be afraid to be around other people. Help me to learn to love like you do. Amen.
