THINK TOGETHER.
Have you ever been inside a tower?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 18:10. The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
Strong towers are almost as old as people themselves. Have you ever seen an old castle or fort? Some very old towers still exist don’t they? In the Bible people start building tall towers right away (do you remember the Tower of Babel story?). Why did people build towers and fortresses? Well, the obvious answer is so that they can feel safe from their enemies.
Solomon is reminding us that everyone builds towers, at least in our minds and hearts. We all have things that we think will keep us safe. And not just safe from physical harm, but safe from bad feelings too. We all have things that make us feel better, feel happy, or feel safe and secure. What makes you feel safe and happy?
Whatever you just named it is likely a good thing, maybe even something that God gave to you like your family, your house, your friends. But none of these good things should take the place of the best thing – God. Solomon says that God’s name (his character and attributes) should be our tower of safety. Why? Because he is the only one that won’t fail us or let us down. Only he can protect us from the worst things in the world – sin, death, and hell. No one and nothing else can.
How does God protect us from the worst things? Through Jesus! When we trust in Jesus we are protected from the penalty and power of sin, and the death and hell that come with being a sinner. When we trust in Jesus we have run into the castle of God and found safety forever. Now nothing can harm us. Nothing can capture us. Nothing can take our salvation away.
So run to Jesus over and over again. Whenever you are afraid, guilty, doubtful, or sad, run to him and remember his saving love for you on the cross.
Because of Jesus we are protectedfrom the worst things in the world.
With Jesus we can always feel safe, no matter what.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Look at pictures of towers, forts, or castles together. How would these structures keep people safe? How does Jesus keep us safe?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you are my fortress. Help me to remember to run to you whenever something difficult comes my way. Amen.
