THINK TOGETHER.
Who have you talked to today? What did you say?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 18:21. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
When Solomon says the power of the tongue, he is talking about our words. Proverbs, and the Bible in general, says a lot about our words. Hopefully by now you can see just how powerful your words are. Everything you say brings either life or death. Or we might say that it affects our lives.
Think about some of the things you’ve said so far today (or yesterday). Have they brought life or death? Good or bad? Have they helped others or hurt others? Did they encourage or discourage someone?
When Solomon says those who love it will eat its fruit, he is talking about those who love to talk, especially those who love to use words to accomplish something. Does that sound like you? Are you a good speaker? Are you able to use words to convince people of things, or persuade people to do things? If so, that is a gift from God. It is a gift that you can use for good or for bad.
What are some ways you can use your gifts of speech for good?
What are some ways you can use your gifts of speech for bad?
Eating its fruit means that if we choose to say good things it will bring good fruit. But if we choose to say bad things it will bring bad fruit. That’s why mom and dad, and your teachers and pastors are correcting your speech all the time. They are trying to protect you from bad things. And that’s why Jesus is always saying good things to you. Like “I love you,” and “I will make everything OK.” He says those good things knowing that they will produce good things in your heart.
Because of Jesus God is always saying good things to us, like “I love you.”
With Jesus we can say good things that bring life to others.
