TLIC Family. PROVERBS. AUGUST 13: FAITHFUL.

THINK TOGETHER.

Are you a faithful friend to others? In what ways?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 20:6. Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find?

Have you ever heard the expression, “You’re all talk.”? It means that a person says things but doesn’t actually do them. That’s what Solomon is talking about in this proverb. There are people who will say that they love you, they proclaim their steadfast love, but they aren’t faithful to you. They aren’t loyal. They let you down over and over. They quit on you when things get hard. Solomon says that it is nearly impossible to find a faithful person. Who can find such a person, he asked.

One of the lessons this teaches us is a hard one, but here it is – everyone will let you down in some way. No one is perfectly faithful and loving. No one will always get it right. Not your mom. Not your dad. Not your friends, siblings, teachers, pastors, and definitely not your celebrity heroes.

Solomon uses the word steadfast love, a word usually used to describe God’s love, to remind his children that only God will truly love them and be faithful to them no matter what. When God described himself to Moses on Mount Sinai he described himself as steadfast love and faithfulness. Only God is perfectly loving and perfectly faithful. But no person is perfect, right?

Well, I think you know where we’re going with this don’t you? Jesus is perfect. Jesus is the faithful person. Have you found him? Or, better yet, has he found you? When you have Jesus you have all of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness in a best friend that will never, ever leave you, quit on you, or turn his back on you no matter how bad you get, or how bad things get in life.

He loves you the same every day.

He takes care of you in every way.

In Heaven with him forever you’ll stay.

Because of Jesus we can stop searching for love and faithfulness.

With Jesus we have a faithful friend forever.
