TLIC Family. PROVERBS. AUGUST 21: THE HEART.

THINK TOGETHER.

In the Bible your heart is the deepest part of you. How would you describe your heart to someone?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 21:2. Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.

Today’s proverb says that the Lord God weighs our heart. Or we might say that the Lord judges our hearts. He knows our hearts better than we do. Have you ever been asked by mom or dad, “Why did you do that?” And you said, “I don’t know.” Well God knows. God knows why we do what we do. He knows what we love and what we hate. He knows our deepest thoughts and attitudes. He knows our secrets. He knows all our dreams and fears. God weighs our hearts.

This of course is good news. Why? Because of the first part of the proverb – every way of a man is right in his own eyes. Solomon is warning us that we often think something is right, but it isn’t. We often think that what we are doing is justified, but it’s not. We say, “I deserve it,” or, “just this once.”

You are growing up in a time where you are being told that no one has the right to tell you how to live or what to do (which is silly because someone telling you that IS someone telling you what to do). You are growing up in a time when everyone is supposed to live however they want, and yet no one is allowed to disagree with anyone else. This will be very confusing for you unless you have someone who you listen to telling you what really IS right and wrong – God!

And God doesn’t just tell us what is right and wrong, Jesus, as God, showed us right and wrong, especially on the cross. He showed us that we are all wrong. That none of us can trust our own ways. He also showed us that we are all loved and forgiven, and his love and forgiveness is the right way to live. And he gives us a new heart that is the same heart as Jesus himself.

Because of Jesus we have a brand new heart that wants to obey God.

With Jesus we can question our hearts and compare them to Jesus’ heart.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Make asking the WHY question a part of your family discipleship. Not just “what did you do wrong?”, but “Why did you do that?” Help your kids to learn how to answer this question.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you weigh my heart. But that’s OK because you gave me a new heart when I trusted in you. Now I love you as you love me. Help me to love you more. Amen.
