THINK TOGETHER.
What’s the most valuable thing you’ve ever bought?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 23:23. Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
There’s nothing more valuable than the truth. That is why Solomon tells his children to buy truth and never sell it. Of course he doesn’t mean that we can literally spend money on truth. He means that truth should be the most precious, the most valuable thing to us.
Notice also that Solomon is not telling his children that the truth is inside of them, in their hearts. No. The truth is something outside of them that they have to find, or buy, and then hold on to for life. As you grow up, many people will tell you that each person has their own personal truth – “My truth” they call it. But that is actually NOT the truth. There are not many truths. There is one truth and we have to seek it, buy it, and never sell it.
Parents, you may have noticed that this verse is in the middle of a section about parent-child relationships. Some parents force the truth onto their kids with strict demands. More “modern” parents allow their children to discover their own “true self.” Both are too extreme, and it is ridiculous to think that a child will discover truth on their own. If you don’t teach them someone else will “Sell” a “truth” to them that they will buy instead (social media, peers, culture, etc.).
Thankfully God has given us all his absolute truth. He has taught us in his word, the Bible, what is true and what is false. He has sent his son, Jesus, as THE TRUTH to both teach us, and, more importantly to rescue us from the LIE that we can be discover our own truth apart from God.
Because of Jesus we can know the truth – Jesus.
With Jesus we can live in the truth – Him.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Find something in your house that you would never sell (something sentimental). Talk about how the truth of Jesus is something we must treasure and never try to “sell.”
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you are my Truth. With you I know everything I need to know about God, myself, life, everything. Help me to hold on to you all the days of my life. Amen.
