TLIC Family. PROVERBS. NOVEMBER 10: MIND.

THINK TOGETHER.

Do you know the difference between and opinion and a fact?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 28:26. Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.

We naturally trust our own minds. We think that what we think is always the best thing to think. This is why the world is full of so many arguments. People believe that they know everything and that they have the truth on their side. But the Bible says that thinking this way makes you a fool. Why? Because you must understand that your mind doesn’t know everything.

Do you know the difference between an opinion and a fact?

Often what we believe are facts (things that are always true no matter what) are actually just opinions (things that we want to be true). Too often we trust in our opinions. Then we begin to think that our opinions are facts. For example, we might say “horses are the best animal.” But that is an opinion not a fact. Or, “the teacher is always blaming me for everything.” Also an opinion, not a fact. We might even try to use the Bible to support our opinions, and that’s very foolish.

When we trust in our opinions like this we are fools. Trusting in your opinions will not let you care about others. Trusting in your own mind will make you proud and dismissive of others. But that’s not loving is it?

Now, to be sure, there are facts that we need to believe. There is truth. That’s why the proverb tells us to walk in wisdom. Wisdom is the fear of the Lord. It is trusting God. Not God’s opinions (he doesn’t have opinions), but his facts.

If God says it clearly then we must believe it completely. The clearest thing that God has said is called the gospel. The good news. What does the gospel say? That we all need a savior from our sins, and that we all have a savior from our sins – Jesus! When you walk with Jesus in faith, you will be delivered from your sins.

Because of Jesus God’s truth for us is clear.

With Jesus we can know the truth and still learn from others.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Practice discerning fact from opinion. Look at a newspaper or statements online to show examples of both.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, help me know fact from opinion, and to trust the fact of the cross. Amen.
