TLIC Family. PROVERBS. NOVEMBER 18: LOWLY.

THINK TOGETHER.

Do you need help today? With what?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 29:23. One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.

Jesus taught the same thing as our proverb. He said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Both our proverb and Jesus are saying something that is pretty much the opposite of what the world around us tells us. You are growing up in a world that wants you to believe that you can do anything because you are good enough. But that is pride. The truth is, no you can’t do anything, and no you aren’t good enough. None of us are. We are all sinners. Very limited sinners. We all have to be very careful about becoming full of pride.

The proud think that they can manage life on their own. The lowly know that they need God to manage their life.

The proud try to make their own rules. The lowly listen to God and follows his rules.

The proud look out mostly for themselves. The lowly seek what is best for others.

The proud are brought low by God. The lowly are honored and raised up by God.

Which do you want to be? Proud or lowly? Do you want to be poor in spirit? You should. What do poor people do? They beg. Do you beg God for his help? You should? Why? Because you need it. All the time. Every day.

Because of Jesus, we now that we have God’s help all day, every day. Jesus, the one who became poor, and lowly for us on the cross, is now honored in the Kingdom of Heaven. When we receive Jesus we too are lowering ourselves in humility so that God can lift us up in honor, just like he did Jesus!

Because of Jesus we are lifted up and honored when we lower ourselves and receive him.

With Jesus we can be humble and lowly, depending on God in all things.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Make Matthew 5:3 a family memory verse. Can you learn all of the beatitudes?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, I trust you to lift me up, not myself. Keep me humble today. Amen.
