THINK TOGETHER.
Do you honor your parents? In what ways?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 30:11. There are those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers.
Over the next few verses Agur (the author of Proverbs 30) will describe a group of people that are very foolish and very wicked. Verse by verse, he will describe them, and let us decide if it also describes us. The first description of this wicked group is that they curse their fathers and refuse to bless their mothers.
In the Ten Commandments, it tells us to honor our father and our mother. These wicked people that Agur is describing are definitely not honoring their parents. In fact, they are doing the opposite. Cursing their father means they disrespect him and wish that he would just get out of the way and leave them alone (do you remember the Prodigal Son story?). They also refuse to say anything kind about their mother, the person who loves them the most.
When a child can’t honor their parents, the two people who love them so much and do so much for them, likely they will not honor anyone. This child will grow up to be a fool and have a very difficult life.
Always remember, your parents are a gift from God. Yes, your parents will mess up at times. They will make mistakes. But God wants us to always respect, love, and obey our parents. Not just because God says so, but because when we honor our parents we start to look like Jesus. Don’t forget Jesus is a Heavenly Son with a Heavenly Father. He is a child with a parent. Jesus always honored his Heavenly Father.
When we honor our parents we look like Jesus. When we honor our parents we show the world around us that we trust Jesus and want to be like him.
Because of Jesus we always have a Heavenly Father that we can honor and trust.
With Jesus we can honor our mother and our father.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Parents, let your children know how they can honor you, bless you, and not curse you. Model honor by doing something to bless your parents (your children’s grandparents).
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you always honored your Father. Help me to trust you so that I can honor my parents just like you. Amen.
