THINK TOGETHER.
What’s your favorite small animal?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 30:24-28. 24Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: 25the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer; 26the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their homes in the cliffs; 27the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank; 28the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces.
I live near the National Zoo in Washington DC. Whenever I go to the zoo I make sure to visit the Small Mammals House. Of course we all want to see the tigers, elephants, and gorillas. But the small mammals are also not to be missed. My favorite are the naked mole rats. I could watch them all day.
Agur doesn’t talk about naked mole rats in Proverbs 30, but he does talk about four other small animals. Ants, rock badgers, locusts, and lizards. Agur wants us to look at these small animals as wise, not necessarily strong and powerful, but smart. They don’t just survive, they thrive.
Ants wisely store up food. We too should store up God’s wisdom from the Bible for when we need it.
Rock badgers aren’t strong but they put their homes into strong cliffs. We too must find our strength in God and in our Rock, Jesus. He will always protect us.
Locusts don’t have a king, but somehow they all know how to fly together as one big group. That’s how they can wipe out an entire field in minutes. We too must join with other Christians in order to fight against sin and the Devil.
The lizard is easy to catch in your hand, but it lives with kings. We too will always be with our king, Jesus. Like the lizard we don’t fight for our rights, we stick with the King of Kings who fights for us and will bring us into his home forever.
There are many ways that nature teaches us about God and our relationship to him and to Jesus. Can you think of any others?
Because of Jesus we will thrive in the presence of God forever.
With Jesus we can be wise even if we are not strong and powerful.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
What small animals live near you? How has God made them wise?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, I may be small, but I can be wise and trust you today. Amen.
