What has your mother taught you?

Proverbs 31:1. The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him:
The last chapter of Proverbs comes from a king named Lemuel. But look closely at what the first verse says. Where does this chapter actually come from? That’s right! Lemuel’s mom. Proverbs 31 is an oracle (teaching) that Lemuel’s mother taught him.
Back in the Old Testament times, moms were a pretty big deal. Especially the mom of the king. She was called the Queen Mother. In most ancient kingdoms, the Queen Mother actually had a lot of power and influence. They could tell the King what to do, and were usually one of his closest advisors.
If you were the mother of the king and could tell him what to do, what would you say to him? What kind of ruler would you want him to be?
King Jesus had a mother too, didn’t he? Do you remember her name? Yep, Mary. When the angel, Gabriel, appeared to Mary, he told her that she would have a son that would be the king. Here’s what Gabriel said:
Luke 1:31-32. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Wow! Jesus is no ordinary king is he? What makes Jesus different from every other king? (Son of the Most High, forever, no end). Jesus is the Son of God who will reign forever, without end. Do you think when Mary laid baby Jesus in a manger she believed that her son was the Son of God, and king forever?
Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and king forever? I hope you do. If you’re not sure, Christmas is a great time to make sure you are believing in Jesus who saved us on the cross and now rules over us from his throne in Heaven.
Because of Jesus we have a king forever!
With Jesus we can trust God’s rule over our lives.
