Proverbs 31:10. An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
We come now to the last section of the book of Proverbs. It is all about an excellent woman – an excellent wife who can find? There are a lot of questions about this final section of Proverbs? Is King Lemuel still quoting his mother, or did Solomon write this? Also, who is the excellent wife? Is it an actual woman, or is this about wisdom and being wise? You might remember that Proverbs calls wisdom a woman many times throughout the book.
The best answer might be both. Yes, it is describing what a great woman is like, but it is also a description of what wisdom is like. And all of us can be wise, both men and women, boys and girls.
So the first thing we see in this section is that wisdom is excellent. This word is usually used to describe mighty warriors. It is the word valor. Have you ever heard that word before? It means courageous. Do you remember the story of Ruth in the Old Testament? She was described with this same word – excellent, courageous, noble, and of high integrity.
Are you excellent? Courageous? Hard working? Truthful? Do you hide from trouble? Do you fail to keep promises? Do you start things without finishing them?
Jesus is the only person who was excellent all of the time? Always noble. Always courageous. Always honest. Always hard working. But when our lives are connected to Jesus’ life, when we know that he has been excellent FOR us, then we too can begin to be excellent.
Did you know that in the New Testament, Christians are called the bride of Jesus? We are his wife. His excellent wife. Jesus has found us, we are precious to him, and he is making us to be like himself – wise and excellent.
Because of Jesus we know that even when we fail, he is excellent for us.
With Jesus we can be excellent like him, courageous, noble, honest, trustworthy.
