THINK TOGETHER.
Have you ever see a newborn baby? What could it do for itself?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 8:1,4. 1Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? 4“To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man.”
In Proverbs 8 Wisdom is like a woman who is calling out to us, inviting us to follow her. God’s wisdom is always invitational. Do you know what that means? It means that God wants us to come to him and be wise. His wisdom invites us to come and see and learn.
When Jesus was born the angels appeared to the shepherds and invited them to go and see Jesus. This is what they said:
Luke 2:12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.
Just like wisdom cries out for us to come and find her, Jesus cried out from that manger for those shepherds to come and find him. You see, Christmas is not just about getting presents; it’s about getting wisdom. God’s greatest gift to us is Jesus, and Jesus is God’s wisdom. In order to save us, God not only became like us, he became like the weakest of us. The most helpless. The most vulnerable. A baby. That’s wisdom! How? Because it’s love. With God, wisdom and love always go together. Love that helps others not ourselves.
This Christmas you can be like the shepherds. You can hear wisdom’s call. You can hear Jesus’ call, and then go find him. Look at him. See him in a manger as a baby, weak and helpless. That’s God’s wisdom – becoming smaller, weaker, lesser. Why would anyone do that? Because that’s how we keep from becoming selfish and that’s how we become loving like Jesus.
Don’t let this Christmas make you selfish. Let it make you wise and loving like Jesus.
Because of Jesus we can see what God’s wisdom looks like.
With Jesus we can be wise by being weak.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Look at pictures of your children as newborns. In what ways were they helpless? Why would God become helpless like this for us? How is that wise?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, help me to use Christmas as a chance to see Jesus as the best present. I want to be loving not selfish, wise not foolish. Amen.
