THINK TOGETHER.
Would you want Jesus to stay at your house? Why or why not?
READ TOGETHER.
John 1:35-39. 35The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day,
For the second day in a row, John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin, calls him the Lamb of God. Do you remember what that means? (see yesterday’s devotion) On this day though, two of John’s disciples will leave him and start to follow Jesus.
Have you ever heard the word disciple before? Do you know what it means?
The word disciple means student, or learner, or follower. Today people go to college and sit in a classroom with a teacher and become that teacher’s student or learner. But in Jesus’ day, the best students would follow the best teachers around from town to town. They would live with their teacher and learn from him all day every day.
Today’s scripture tells the story of Jesus moving from being a construction worker to being a teacher, or rabbi. Jesus gets his first students, his first disciples. The story is actually a bit funny. Jesus doesn’t ask for students to follow him (yet), they just start following him home. When Jesus asks them what are you seeking, the only answer they can think of is, we want to see where you live.
What was Jesus’ answer? Come and see.
This is always Jesus’ answer, an invitation to come be with him. This is what Jesus says to you every day.
Come and see how much I love you.
Come and see what I did for you when I died on the cross.
Come and see how much you can trust me.
Come and see what Heaven will be like.
Come and see how you can be like me.
Do you want to be where Jesus is? If you do, Jesus is saying come and see. Hopefully you’ll choose to stay with Jesus, because he sure wants to stay with you.
Because of Jesus we can always be with God, learning from him.
With Jesus we can see everything that God has done for us.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Play follow the leader together. Is it hard to follow someone else? How soon did you want to go your own way?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, I want to stay with you. I know that you want to stay with me too. Help me to trust that you are always with me. Amen.
