TLIC Family. 100 DAYS WITH JESUS. DAY 14: THE DAY JESUS WENT TO SAMARIA.

THINK TOGETHER.

Have you ever felt out of place somewhere?

READ TOGETHER.

John 4:1-7. 1Now when Jesus…left Judea and departed again for Galilee. 4And he had to pass through Samaria. 5So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”

So far, since being baptized by John, Jesus has been in Judea, the southern part of his country. Now he is going to go back north to where he grew up, Galilee. But in order to get to Galilee, Jesus will go through Samaria. Read verse 4 again. It says Jesus HAD to pass through Samaria. This is very surprising language. Why? Because Jews (Jesus was a Jew) NEVER went through Samaria. They hated Samaria and they hated the Samaritans. Why? Because the Samaritans were different. They worshipped different, they dressed different, they looked different. The Samaritans were a mixed race people, part Jewish and part Assyrian, so the Jews thought that the Samaritans were impure and unholy before God.

Jesus would definitely be out of place in Samaria. But he didn’t care. He went through Samaria on purpose. He stopped at a well to rest on purpose. He talked to a Samaritan woman at that well on purpose.

She also must have felt out of place. She comes to the well alone in the middle of the day (the sixth hour was noon).  Usually the women would go to the well to get water in the morning. They would all go together and talk and laugh and have fun before starting their busy days. But she’s there by herself. Why? For some reason no one likes her. But Jesus does. Jesus likes and he loves everyone.

And so he asks her for a drink.

This will begin a long conversation with this woman. A conversation that will lead to her believing in Jesus and trusting him to be her savior. Jesus will tell her that he can give her living water to drink, water that will take away her thirst forever.

John 4:14. whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

Jesus was saying that he is able to give us all eternal life. Life with God forever. Life that will always make us feel loved and cared for. Life that will never leave us feeling out of place, because Jesus will always be there with us. Even when we have no other friends, like the woman at the well, we will always have Jesus with us. He will always be our friend that goes with us wherever we go.

Because of Jesus we can have his eternal life inside of us.

With Jesus we are never alone.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Drink some refreshing water together. How does water keep our bodies alive physically (remember, you are made up of mostly water)? How does Jesus, our Living Water, keep us alive spiritually?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, I don’t ever want to feel out of place or alone. Help me know that you are WITH me because by faith in you I have you living IN me. Amen.
