THINK TOGETHER.
Why do people die?
READ TOGETHER.
Luke 23:46. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.
Did you think about the question above? Why do people die?
In the first book of the Bible, Genesis, we can see that when God created people he did not create them to die. He actually created them to trust him and live forever by eating from the Tree of Life. You might remember that God warned Adam and Eve to not eat from the Tree of Knowledge, because if they did they would “surely die.” Of course, they did eat from that forbidden tree, and they did die. And every human being that has lived after them has also died. The Apostle Paul explains why we die in his letter to the Romans:
Romans 6:23. For the wages of sin is death…
Because of sin, everyone and everything is dying and will die. Plants die. Animals die. People die. Even the sun is dying and so is the planet Earth. Death is the saddest and sometimes scariest thing we have to face as human beings. So much so, that most people don’t ever want to talk about it. You might even be wishing that this devotional would end so that we can stop talking about death right now.
But Jesus wasn’t afraid to face death. He wasn’t afraid to die. Like we said yesterday, Jesus was the only perfect person, the only person who did NOT deserve to die. So why did Jesus die if he didn’t have to? If death is the punishment for sin, and Jesus never sinned, then why did he die?
He died for us!
He died to pay for all our sins.
He died to destroy death when he defeated it three days later.
He died to reverse everything bad and turn it into something good. Even death has been reversed. Look at what Jesus said on the cross – Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. Jesus went from “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me,” to “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit (my life).”
That’s the greatest reversal ever! From forsaken to forgiven. From punishment to the presence of God. From questions to commitment. From fear to faith. From death to life.
Now, with Jesus we don’t have to fear dying either. When we die we will be with the Lord Jesus forever. Death doesn’t have to scare us anymore, because now we have eternal life with Jesus.
Romans 6:23. For the wages of sin is death… but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Because of Jesus we don’ have to fear death and dying.
With Jesus we will live forever with God.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Make Romans 6:23 a family memory verse.
PRAY TOGETHER
Father, because you sent Jesus to die for me I don’t have to be afraid of anything, even dying. Amen.
