What do you already know about the Holy Spirit?

Genesis 1:1-2. 1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
If I asked you, who created the world, what would your answer be?
God?
And, of course, God is the correct answer – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
But did you know that the Holy Spirit was also there when the world was created by God? And do you know why he was there? Because the Holy Spirit IS God.
Have you ever heard the word Trinity before? Trinity is a word that combines two words: tri and unity. Tri means three. Unity means one. God is three in one. The God of the Bible, the God who created the world is one God in three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Spirit.
The Bible says that when God created the world that the Spirit of God was hovering like a bird over the surface of the waters. The Spirit wasn’t just there to watch. The Spirit was there to carry out everything that God the Father said. Everything in this world starts with the Father, but it is carried out by the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is always acting. He’s always doing. He’s always carrying out the will and the words of the Father. And because the Father and the Spirit are ONE, they always have the same desires, plan, and choices.
And just like he did so many years ago, the Holy Spirit is still creating. When the Earth was formless and empty, just a giant blob of water with no life and no light, the Spirit brought life and light to that Earth. Light, land, plants, animals, and people all came about to fill the Earth with God’s beauty and goodness. In the same way, the Spirit has taken each person who trusts in Jesus and formed them and filled them with the goodness of God – the light and life of Jesus.
Have you trusted in Jesus to save you from your sins? If you have, then the Holy Spirit is living inside of you, hovering over you as the creation of God. He is adding Jesus’ love to your life so that you can be more and more like him. The Bible calls this the NEW Creation. That is what we are with Jesus. Not a formless and empty blob of nothing, but a perfectly made creation of God.
Because of the Spirit everything was created by God.
By the Spirit you are the New Creation of God when you trust in Jesus to save you.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Read Genesis 1 together. Talk about how everything that was made was made by the Spirit. Draw pictures of the days of creation, making sure to include the Spirit in your pictures.
PRAY TOGETHER
Father, your Spirit made everything including me. Now he is making me again into a picture of Jesus. Thank you Holy Spirit for always being at work in me. Amen.
