THINK TOGETHER.
What do you remember about the flood story in the Bible?
READ TOGETHER.
Genesis 6:3. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”
The words above were spoken by God right before he sent the flood upon Earth.
Do you remember the flood story? Maybe you remember Noah and his ark. Or maybe you remember all the animals that went into the ark by twosies twosies. Elephants and kangaroosis, roosis.
But the flood story isn’t really about the animals. It’s about sin. Do you know what sin is? Sin is when we disobey God. We sin whenever we do things our own way rather than God’s way. Have you ever done that? Have you ever disobeyed God?
Me too.
At the time of the flood, everyone on Earth was sinning, a lot. So much that God said My Spirit will not put up with humans for much longer. On Day 2 we read about the Holy Spirit putting a spirit inside of people so that they could be alive. But now God is saying that the Holy Spirit is going to make everyone’s life shorter. Why? Well, because of all the sinning. And then came the flood. God was really mad at us.
But do you remember what God put in the sky after the flood? That’s right, the rainbow.
Have you ever seen a bow and arrow? The rainbow in the sky is supposed to look like a bow that shoots arrows. Which way does the rainbow point? Yes, it points toward Heaven where God lives. The rainbow pointed at God is his way of saying I won’t punish you people for your sins, but instead I will punish myself. And that’s what God did when Jesus died on the cross – God punished God for our sins.
What does that have to do with the Holy Spirit? Well now the Spirit is not just putting up with us humans. He is living inside of us, loving us and giving us eternal life, which is way more than just 120 years.
Because of the Holy Spirit all our sin can be forgiven.
With the Holy Spirit we don’t have to choose to sin.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Draw a rainbow together. Talk about how the rainbow reminds us of God’s promise to not flood the world, but also his promise to forgive our sins and give us eternal life forever with him.
PRAY TOGETHER
Father, I’m so glad that you are willing to put up with me. Amen.
