TLIC Family. 40 DAYS WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. DAY 6: THE DAY THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME UPON DAVID.

THINK TOGETHER.

Is the Holy Spirit living in you? If you said yes, how do you know?

READ TOGETHER.

1 Samuel 16:13-14. 13So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. 14Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul…

In the Old Testament days, the Holy Spirit acted a bit differently than he does with us today. Today, anyone who has trusted in Jesus receives the Holy Spirit who enters into our hearts. Through our faith in Jesus the Holy Spirit INDWELLS us. That means he lives inside us. Look at how the Apostle Paul explains this:

Ephesians 1:13. when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.

1 Corinthians 6:19. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?

But in the Old Testament days the Holy Spirit didn’t live inside everyone who believed in God. The Holy Spirit CAME UPON people for a specific purpose and only for a while. In verse 14 above, the Holy Spirit left King Saul, while in verse 13 the Holy Spirit came upon David. Like Samson (see day 5), David would have the Holy Spirit when have faced Goliath and became a great warrior. David would have the Holy Spirit when he wrote beautiful poems called psalms that are now in our Bible. David would have the Holy Spirit when he became king over Israel and brought peace to the land. And David would have the Holy Spirit when he repented of his sins (and he sure did commit some pretty big sins).

From the time the prophet Samuel anointed him, David didn’t do anything without the Holy Spirit. And from the time you trusted in Jesus, you haven’t done anything without the Holy Spirit too.

When you obey Jesus by respecting your parents and being kind to others, that’s the Holy Spirit.

When you listen to Bible stories, understand them, and want to learn from them, that’s the Holy Spirit.

When you know that God loves you no matter what, that’s the Holy Spirit.

When you sing songs about God and Jesus and worship him, that’s the Holy Spirit.

But wait, can I lose the Holy Spirit like King Saul did? What if the Holy Spirit leaves me? Don’t worry, he won’t ever leave you. Jesus himself promised us that the Holy Spirit would live in us forever. After Jesus died on the cross, the Spirit doesn’t have to just COME UPON us, he can INDWELL us. Why? Because through Jesus we have a brand new heart. A heart that can be the Temple of God.

Because of the Holy Spirit we have God living inside of us.

With the Holy Spirit we can do what God wants us to do.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Make 1 Corinthians 6:19 a family memory verse.

PRAY TOGETHER

Father, thank you for giving me the Holy Spirit forever. Jesus, thank you for taking away my sin so that the Holy Spirit can live in my heart for good and not just come and go like he did with Saul. Amen.
