Can you hide from God?
READ TOGETHER.
Psalm 139:7-8. 7I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! 8If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.
God is omnipresent. That’s a big word that means that he is everywhere, all the time, at the same time. And the Holy Spirit omnipresent too. Why? Because the Holy Spirit is God.
David is telling us that we can never be outside of the presence of God. If we blast into outer space (heaven), the Holy Spirit is right there with us. If we could dig down into the ground, into the grave, the Holy Spirit is there too.
Have you ever thought you can hide from God? Jonah thought that. Jonah thought he could run away from God, but could he? Nope. God was there. The Holy Spirit was on the boat and in the sea, and in the whale’s belly with Jonah the whole time.
And the Holy Spirit is with you too. He’s everywhere. He sees everything. He’s in your house, your school, your church, your neighborhood. He see’s everything we do. Not only that, but he also knows everything we are thinking too. Look at what else King David says in Psalm 139.
Psalm 139:1-6. 1O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. 3You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. 4You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. 5You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!
It might feel kind of scary to know that God knows everything about us, even what we think. But it shouldn’t be scary at all. Why not? Because God, the Holy Spirit, is the one person who knows everything about you, everything you think, and everything you do, and he still loves you completely, no matter what.
In fact, the Holy Spirit loves us so much that he doesn’t just want to be WITH us, like Psalm 139 describes, he wants to be IN us like Jesus described to his disciples:
John 14:17. You know [the Holy Spirit], because he lives WITH you now and later will be IN you.
Does that describe you? Does the Holy Spirit live IN you? If you have trusted in Jesus it does. The Holy Spirit IN us is not only with us wherever we go, he is in us changing us from the inside out. He not only knows our thoughts, he gives us the thoughts of Jesus himself so that we can trust God and love others like Jesus did. Is that happening to you? If you are a Christian it is. And that’s good news!
Because of the Holy Spirit we can never escape God.
With the Holy Spirit we are being changed by God.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Play hide and seek (or another hiding game). We can hide from each other, but not from the Spirit.
PRAY TOGETHER
Father, because I have Jesus, I have the Holy Spirit with me and in me all the time, wherever I go. That means that you love me and want to lead me. Show me the way to live today. Amen.
