TLIC Family. 40 DAYS WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. DAY 10: THE DAY THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERED THE MESSIAH.

THINK TOGETHER.

Have you ever heard the word Messiah? Do you know who or what the Messiah is?

READ TOGETHER.

Isaiah 11:1-2. 1Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. 2And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

Yesterday we talked about the prophet Ezekiel. Like all prophets, Ezekiel had the Holy Spirit with him so that he could speak the words of God to his people.

Isaiah was another prophet that spoke the words of God. He too had the Holy Spirit. More than any other prophet, Isaiah talked about the Messiah. Do you know who or what the Messiah is?

The word “messiah” means “anointed one.” In the Old Testament kings, priests, and prophets were all anointed by God to do his work. Usually, they would have oil poured over their heads to symbolize God’s anointing with the Holy Spirit. The Messiah was special because he would be all three – a king, a priest, and a prophet. The Messiah was promised by God to come as a king like David, a prophet like Moses, and a priest like Melchizedek (Melchizedek was a priest-king who lived when Abraham lived, Gen. 14).

The Messiah was God’s hero who would come to save Israel. Look at Isaiah 11:1-2 again. Isaiah says that the Messiah will come from David’s family, but more importantly he will have the Spirit resting upon him.

By now you have probably figured out who God’s messiah is. That’s right, it’s Jesus! Jesus will come as our King, our great high priest, and our prophet. But most importantly, he will come to save God’s people. Not from their earthly enemies, but from their spiritual enemy – Sin!

Jesus will have the Holy Spirit with him, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. By the Holy Spirit, Jesus will know God’s will and he will obey God’s will, even to the point of dying on the cross for our sins. Thank you, Jesus, for obeying God perfectly for us.

Remember, Jesus is fully God, and as God he was one with the Holy Spirit who is also fully God. But Jesus is also a person, and as a person he needed the Holy Spirit resting on him, just like David did, and Ezekiel and Isaiah did.

When God sent his messiah to save us, he didn’t just send a human being, he sent himself. Jesus is God so the Messiah is God. God sent God empowered by God to save us from sin. God the Father sent God the Son empowered by God the Spirit to save us. Now, when we trust in Jesus, we have the same Holy Spirit resting on us. Better yet, living inside of us. Just like David. Just like Ezekiel. Just like Jesus.

Because of the Holy Spirit our Messiah saved us from sin.

With the Holy Spirit we can obey like Jesus.
