What do you remember about the day you were born?
READ TOGETHER.
John 3:5-7. 5Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. 7So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’
What do you remember about the day you were born? Most likely, nothing. But trust me it happened and the Holy Spirit was involved.
All life comes from the Holy Spirit. Every time a baby is born it is because the Holy Spirit gave that baby physical life. But there is another kind of life that also comes from the Holy Spirit. Spiritual life. And that is what Jesus is talking about in John 3.
Do you remember the last couple of days in this devotional? The Holy Spirit gave Jesus physical life through Mary, his mother. Then, at his baptism, the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus and gave him spiritual life through his power. The power of love that would help Jesus resist the temptation of Satan in the wilderness and the power of faith to trust his heavenly Father.
In John 3, Jesus is having a conversation with one of the religious leaders, a very important man named Nicodemus. Jesus is telling Nicodemus one of the most important things we can ever learn – You must be born again. We have to be born twice. Twice? Yes, twice. Once physically, and a second time spiritually. And that spiritual birth is called being born of the Holy Spirit. Or Jesus calls it being born again.
Have you been born? Yes.
Have you been born again?
How is someone born again? By faith in Jesus. A little bit later, John will write this very famous verse. Do you know it?
John 3:16. For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
God loves us so much that he sent his only Son, Jesus, to come to us and live perfectly in our place and die sacrificially for our sins. And with all of our sins paid for and forgiven, God can offer us his eternal life to come into us and make us like him. We receive that eternal life by simple faith, trusting that Jesus alone saves us. And when we do, we are born again. The Holy Spirit comes into our hearts and gives us the same exact eternal life that Jesus has.
Because of the Holy Spirit we can be born again.
With the Holy Spirit we have everything that Jesus has, his same exact eternal life.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Look at baby pictures together. What do mom and dad remember about the day you were born? What about being born again? Have you been born again? If not, you can do it today by trusting in Jesus alone to save you.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, I know I need you to save me from my sin. I trust in you alone. Send the Holy Spirit to come into my heart and give me your eternal life. Amen.
