TLIC Family. Who Am I? Day 1: I am created.

Genesis 1:1. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

A wise man once said that the most important thing we can do in this life is to become who we already are. That means that we don’t try to be what we want to be, we must be what we were made to be.

Made to be?

That’s right, you were made. You were created. By God. That’s what the very first verse in the Bible tells us – God created everything. When Genesis 1:1 says that “God created the heavens and the earth,” Moses, the author, is using a figure of speech (do you know what a figure of speech is?) that is meant to mean God made everything in all of creation. From the heavens or skies above, to the earth or land below.

Do you know what this means?

It means that you are not an accident.

It means that you were made by God for a reason.

It means that you don’t control your own life, God does.

It means you don’t have to figure out what to be; you were created to be something already.

That’s what we will spend the next several days exploring – what does God want me to be.

As you grow up, especially if you are growing up in America, the world around you will tell you that you have to figure out who you are and what you want to be. Maybe you’ve already been asked what you want to be when you grow up. It’s fine to think about that, but trust me, what you want to be will change over and over again as you get older. Or maybe you will never become the thig you dream of becoming. Just ask your mom and dad, or grandparents, if they are doing the thing they dreamed of doing when they were young. Probably not.

But don’t be sad, there’s something way more important than becoming what you want to be. It’s way more important because it starts with God and not you. There’s becoming what God says you already are: his creation. You don’t ever have to become God’s creation; you simply have to BE it. Like the wise man said, “Become what you already are.”

Talk about it together: Have you ever created/made/built something (maybe out of Legos, etc.)? Did you expect it to be more than what you made it to be, or to simply be what you made it to be?

Do Something together: Read Psalm 139:1-18 together to hear more about what it means to be God’s creation.

Pray together: Father, help me to remember that you made me to be what you want me to be.
