TLIC Family. Day 148. May 28: Abide in my love.

THINK TOGETHER

What would your dream house be like? What would it have in it?

READ TOGETHER

Just before Jesus died on the cross he told his disciples how much he loved them. And he told them to love each other. Listen to what Jesu said to them in John’s gospel chapter 15:

John 15:9-11. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

Jesus told his disciples to “abide in his love.” As we said yesterday, abide means to live, like in a house.

Imagine moving into a beautiful brand new house. What did you say your dream house would have in it? Would it have a big TV? A game room? A pool? A giant bean bag chair?

Jesus is inviting us to move into the greatest house ever, but it’s invisible. It’s his love house! When you know that Jesus loves you, you know that God the Father loves you too. And when you know that God loves you know that everything is going to be OK. God’s perfect love means we can trust him even when we’re afraid, or sad, or angry, or frustrated. And because God loves us we can always run to him and tell him how we feel instead of getting mad at others or pouting or shouting.

And when we know how much God loves us then we can love others too. Look at what Jesus said next to the disciples:

12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.

Jesus tells them that because they are loved by God now they can love others too. They can even love sacrificially. Do you know what that means? It means we help others and share with others even when it means we don’t get our way. It means we are a good friend even if it is hard or costs us something.

That’s how Jesus loved us on the cross, and that’s how we can love others when we live in Jesus’ love.

Because of Jesus we can live in his love house.

With Jesus we can love others sacrificially.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Watch this trailer for Extreme Home Makeover together. Talk about how all that must be sacrificed for a family to be given a new home. And talk about all that Jesus sacrificed so that we could live in his love forever.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

Because you love me I can love others too. Help me to learn to love even when it hurts.

Amen.
