TLIC Family. Day 176. June 25: Christ became a curse for us.

THINK TOGETHER

When you hear the word “curse” what comes to mind?

READ TOGETHER

Have you ever seen the movie Holes? Holes is the story of a young man named Stanley that is cursed. Cursed because of something mean that his ancestor did in the past. The movies tells the story of how Stanley breaks the curse by doing something kind and self-sacrificing for someone else.

The idea of someone being under a curse or spell is a popular theme in movies and stories isn’t it? Sleeping Beauty. Snow White. Ella Enchanted. Shrek.

The Bible says that every person ever born is under a curse. It’s called the curse of the Law. The Law of God tells us that God is perfect, and pure, and holy, but we are not. And because we are full of sin and not full of God’s perfection, we are cursed. We are doomed to be separated from God and his love forever. Why? Because, like Stanley’s ancestor, we have all done mean things. Sinful things. Even rebellious things.

But the Apostle Paul tells us the good news of Jesus in Galatians chapter 3:

Galatians 3:13. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

The Law says that we have to try to earn our way to God by doing everything he commands perfectly. But can anyone do that? Can anyone be perfect? Are you perfect?

Nope.

But Jesus was perfect. Jesus obeyed the whole Law of God all the time and broke the curse by being good in our place. And then, on the cross, he took the curse that we all deserve, separation from God, and died for us. He “became the curse.” Like Stanley in Holes, he broke the curse by sacrificing himself and loving us perfectly.

Now, when we trust in Jesus, we are no longer cursed. We are blessed! Blessed with the life and love of Jesus. As Paul says, the “promised Holy Spirit lives in us by faith.” Which means now we can never be cursed again. Only blessed. And now we can obey God and his law without it ever cursing us. Why? Because Jesus already obeyed for us and broke the curse forever and ever.

Because of Jesus we are blessed and not cursed.

With Jesus we can obey God’s law without the fear of the curse.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Watch the movie Holes together. Here’s the trailer:

And here’s another good song to sing together.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You obeyed perfectly for me and broke the curse of the Law. Help me to now obey knowing that you love me no matter what, even if I fail.

Amen.
