THINK TOGETHER
What’s your favorite smell?
READ TOGETHER
Did you know that your life has a smell?
Lots of things have a smell don’t they? What can you smell right now?
Even you have a smell. Your body has a smell. Sometimes our bodies smell bad and sometimes they smell good. And sometimes we put on things, like deodorant or perfume, to help us smell better.
The sense of smell is very powerful. Often when we smell something it will trigger a memory in our brain. Has that ever happened to you? Do any certain smells remind you of something else?
In 2 Corinthians Paul says that our life has a smell. Listen to what he says here in 2 Corinthians chapter 2:
2 Corinthians 2:14-16. But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God…
Paul is describing something very specific from his time in history. When a king would conquer his enemies in battle he would return back home and march into the city in a huge victory parade. But along with his soldiers that won the battle, the enemy soldiers who lost would also be paraded around for all to see. And in this parade large amounts of incense would be burning. So not only could you hear this victory parade coming, but you could also smell it coming from miles away.
Paul is saying that we smell like Jesus’ victory parade. But Paul doesn’t mean that we literally smell a certain way. What he really wants us to understand is not about how we actually smell, but how we actually live. We are supposed to live like those soldiers that have been conquered by Jesus.
Conquered by Jesus?
Yes! We have been conquered by Jesus’ love, and mercy, and kindness. Once we were God’s enemies, but then Jesus defeated the sin deep in our hearts and conquered it forever. Now we are in Jesus’ victory parade, and all the things we do that come from trusting him are the incense that smells so good to God.
Being kind to others – that smells like Jesus.
Sharing what you have – that smells like Jesus.
Protecting those who are weaker than you – that smells like Jesus.
Obeying your parents – that smells like Jesus.
Giving God the credit when something good happens – that smells like Jesus.
Asking God for help when you need it – that smells like Jesus.
Will you smell like Jesus today?
Because of Jesus our sin has been conquered and we are controlled by God.
With Jesus we can live a life that smells good (pleases) God.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Make a list of all your favorite smells. What things do these smells remind you of? Talk about how our lives can remind people of Jesus and his love too.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus,
You have conquered my heart. I want to smell good to you as I live like you.
Amen.
