THINK TOGETHER
What does it mean to “think before you act,” or “think before you speak?”
READ TOGETHER
The book of Romans (can you find Romans in your Bible?) is so great because it just keeps telling us more and more of the gifts that we have from God because we are connected to Jesus.
Because we are connected to Jesus we are forgiven.
Because we are connected to Jesus we are dead to sin.
Because we are connected to Jesus we are alive to God.
Because we are connected to Jesus we will never be condemned (guilty).
Because we are connected to Jesus we have his same mind – the mind of the Spirit.
The mind of the Spirit? Yes. Listen to how Paul talks about our new mind here in Romans 8:
Romans 8:5-6. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind on the flesh is death, but the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
Jesus changes how we think. How? By giving us a whole new mind. Or a whole new way of thinking.
Usually we think about ourselves a lot. Or we think that we have to be good in order to make God like us. But Jesus gives us a whole new way to think. We don’t have to think just about ourselves and what we want. When we know that we are loved by God we can think about others instead. And we don’t have to be good to make God like us. God likes us no matter what. And when we think about that, it will make us want to be good simply because we know God is for us and all that he tells us is for our good.
One of the most important things you can learn as you grow up, and especially as you grow up into Jesus, is how important your thoughts are. How you think determines how your life will go. So what we must learn how to do is think with the mind of Jesus.
How did Jesus think? What did he think about?
Simply put he spent his time thinking about his heavenly Father. The Father’s love. The Father’s goodness and kindness. Jesus always thought about how much he was loved and protected by God. And so can we. Why? Because we have the same mind as Jesus – the “mind of the Spirit.” The mind of faith in God. The mind of love.
Because of Jesus we have his same mind – the mind of the Spirit.
With Jesus we can think about how much God loves us.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Make a family plan to spend time thinking about and talking about the gospel each day (obviously if you are reading this blog together you’re doing that already – yay!). Are there ways you can keep Jesus in the forefront of your thinking? Songs? Stories? Bible verses?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus,
Thank you for giving me your mind. Help me to think about how much God loves me because of you.
Amen.
