TLIC Family. Day 268. September 25: Walk as children of light.

THINK TOGETHER

If you were the child of a dog what would you be? How would your life be different? Or, if you were the child of a chicken what would you be? How would your life be different?

READ TOGETHER

The message you will hear most of your life is “Become what you want to be.”

The message of Jesus is “BE WHAT YOU ARE.”

Listen to how the Apostle Paul says it to the Ephesians here in chapter 5:

Ephesians 5:8-9. ⁸ for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light ⁹ (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true),

First Paul says that we “are light in the Lord” (that’s Jesus). Then he tells us to “Walk as children of light.”

BE what you ARE.

You ARE light, so BE light.

Jesus is light and you are connected to Jesus. He lives inside of you. So BE light.

This is way different from saying “become light.” Or, “Try to be light.” Or “Make your way to the light.”

God always starts with what we ARE. And then he tells us that we can BE what we are.

And why are we light?

Because we are children of the Light. We are children of God. What is the child of a dog? Yes – a dog. And what is the child of a chicken? Yes – a chicken. What is the child of a king or queen? Yes – a prince or princess who will one day be king or queen. And what is a child of the Light? Yes – light!

But what does it mean to be a child of light? It means that, like a flashlight in a dark room, we bring Jesus’ hope and love to dark places. Look again at verse 9. Paul calls the light “all that is good, and right, and true.”

Good. Right. True.

That’s what Jesus is. And that’s what we are. Now BE what you ARE.

Because of Jesus we are God’s light.

With Jesus we can live as the light of Jesus – doing all that is good, right, and true.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Look at pictures of baby animas together. Talk about how children are whatever their parents are (puppies are dogs, kittens are cats). If we are children of the Light of God then we ARE the light of God. How weird would it be for a puppy to try to live as a cat, or a bird, or a fish? God also wants us to BE what we ARE.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You are the light! And you have made me your light. Help me to be a bright light wherever I go for you.
