TLIC Family. Day 283. October 10: Filled with the knowledge of his will.

THINK TOGETHER

What are some of the way that you are being filled with knowledge (school, church, family, TV, etc.)?

READ TOGETHER

The Apostle Paul opens up his letter to the Christians in the city of Colossae (the Colossians) with a prayer. If you were going to pray for other Christians what would you pray for? What do you think Paul would pray for? Here’s how his prayer begins:

Colossians 1:9. And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,

Paul prays that these Christians (and all Christians including us) would be filled with a knowledge of God’s will. In other words, Paul wants us to know what God wants.

So what does God want?

Sometimes Christians will think about God’s will as a specific plan for their life. Like where they should go to school, or who they should get married to, or what job to take. And God does care about the choices we make. But when the Bible talks about knowing the will of God, o knowing God’s plan for our life, it usually means knowing the more important plan of God – making us like Jesus.

Becoming like Jesus is God’s plan for your life. That’s why Paul says we need “SPIRITUAL WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING.” Not earthly wisdom, like what video game to buy, or what book to read for your book report, or even what school to go to.

So the most important question that everyone who loves Jesus should be asking each time we make a choice is, “Will this make me more like Jesus?”  Or, “Would this be something that Jesus would want me to do?”

More than anything else God wants us to be like Jesus. And the good news is that if we have trusted in Jesus as our savior then his life is connected to ours and we WILL be like him. Little by little. Day by day. We will get more and more spiritual knowledge, which is just a fancy way of saying that we will know what Jesus is like more and more. We will be filled with the knowledge of Jesus and his great love for us no matter what.

Because of Jesus we can know God’s will – to be like Jesus.

With Jesus we can be like him.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Watch this scene of Linus talking about the Great Pumpkin. Is Linus wise? How is Jesus different from the Great Pumpkin? Jesus is a person not a pumpkin. We can be like a person, but not a pumpkin.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

God wants me to be more like you and I want to be more like you. Keep giving me spiritual knowledge of who you are and what you are like so I can live like you do.

Amen.
